Nestled in the heart of Philipsburg, The Dead Canary isn’t just a brewery—it’s a hub for community, creativity, and craft beer. Owned by Eric Kelmenson and Ed Shaw, this locally beloved spot at 5 N Front Street has been serving up one-of-a-kind brews and good vibes for the past two years.

A Brewery with a Mission

Philipsburg had no craft breweries before The Dead Canary opened its doors. Eric saw an opportunity—not just to bring great beer to the town, but to foster a welcoming, laid-back space where locals and visitors alike could gather. His vision? A community-focused brewery offering incredible craft beer, unique cocktails, and engaging local events. Ed had been a passionate supporter from the beginning and came on as brewer and co-owner in November of 2024.

A Taste of The Dead Canary

From crisp ales to bold IPAs, The Dead Canary offers a diverse selection of beverages, with their house cream ale, The Canary, reigning as the top seller. Hot on its heels is their house IPA, The Hoffer, a local favorite that keeps customers coming back.

But The Dead Canary is more than just a brewery—it’s a full experience. In addition to their signature drinks, they host community events, trivia nights, open mic nights, and even a “Drink and Draw” event for the creatively inclined.

Building Community, One Pint at a Time

What truly sets The Dead Canary apart is its dedication to Philipsburg’s growth and vibrancy. They actively participate in community traditions like Heritage Days, the Wine Walk, and the Mid-Century Christmas event, and they even helped develop a public seating area across the street where anyone can relax and enjoy the town.

“We employ local community members, host live music and art events, and take input from our customers on what we offer,” says Eric. This hands-on approach makes The Dead Canary a place where everyone feels like family.

Looking Ahead

As The Dead Canary continues to thrive, Eric and Ed have big dreams for the future. An expanded taproom and a full kitchen are on the horizon, as well as a dedicated stage for live performances—further solidifying their place as a cultural staple in Philipsburg.
